Knitted Project For Teddies Clothes

This is the first, and probably the last, knitted project I have attempted to design.  Mini knitting and myself are not the best of friends!  However I hope those of you who know as little about mini knitting as I do will attempt this simple little trouser and jumper outfit.  For everyone else, I am sure you could probably do better, but feel free to have a play about with the pattern.  ;o)

I used the pattern from Dolls' House Needlecrafts by Venus A Dodge for my mini teddy.  I used 50's crochet cotton to achieve a teddy measuring approximately 1 3/4" in height.  David & Charles - ISBN 0715301691

Materials: DMC Fil a Dentelles (80's tatting/crochet cotton) in two colours; size 20 knitting needles.

TROUSERS

Beginning at the waist edge.  Cast on 13 stitches.  Work 14 rows in garter stitch - every row knit.

Cast on 2 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows for the crotch.

Work 16 more rows in garter stitch for the leg.  Cast off.

Work a second leg to match the first.  Sew up the front and half the back seam, sew up the leg seams and fit on your teddy.  Sew up the rest of the back seam.  Run a length of thread through the waist, pull up to fit.

JUMPER

Front and back alike. Beginning at the bottom edge.  Cast on 16 stitches.  Work 4 rows in k1, p1, rib.

Work 4 rows in stocking stitch, increasing 2 stitches on the first row.

Armholes: Cast off 2 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows.  Work 12 more rows in stocking stitch.

Neck: Knit the first 4 stitches, cast off the next 6 stitches, knit to the end of the row.  Work 3 more rows on these 4 stitches. Cast off.

Rejoin the thread to the remaining 4 stitches.  Purl to the end of the row.  Work 2 more rows in stocking stitch.  Cast off.

Work a second piece to match.

Collar: Sew up one of the shoulder seams. Pick up and knit 28 stitches around the neck edge.  Work 3 rows in K1, P1, rib.  Cast off in rib.

Sleeves: Beginning at the cuff.  Cast on 20 stitches.  Work 4 rows in K1, P1, rib.  Work 12 rows in stocking stitch, increasing 2 stitches on the third, fifth, and seventh rows. (26 stitches)  Cast off.  Work the second sleeve as the first.

Sew the sleeves into the armholes, sew up the side and sleeve seams.

NOTE: I found that the neck was a little small to go over Ickle Ted's head, so I only sewed up the second shoulder and neckband after sewing in the sleeves.  Your teddy may not be as big headed as mine!

I hope you enjoy this pattern, and can find a use for it somewhere in your mini making.  Both the jumper and trousers would also be suitable for a mini doll, and as the pattern is pretty basic, you could easily adapt it for other dolls, teddies, and so on.

The mini blanket?  Ickle Ted insisted he wanted a blanket.  As my mini knitting skills don't work very well with 1 ply yarn, I decided to use some of my oddments and make him a crochet blanket.  (US terms in brackets)
